Woody Harrelson is looking back at the moment that sparked years of speculation about whether he and Matthew McConaughey could be related. In an interview published Aug. 21 by Variety, Harrelson said McConaughey’s mother, Mary Kathlene McConaughey, once told him she knew his father.
Harrelson said the comment surprised him because he had known her for more than 25 years and had never heard anything like it before. He added that she was in a good mood at the time and attributed that, in part, to wine.
According to Harrelson, the remark led him to wonder what else might be behind the story. He later learned that McConaughey’s parents were not just friends with his father, but that there may have been more to the relationship.
McConaughey has also spoken about the family connection rumors, saying on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast in 2023 that his mother made a similar comment in Greece a few years earlier. The two actors have since discussed the possibility enough to inspire an upcoming TV show, Brothers, in which they will play fictionalized versions of themselves.
