Sweater vests are shaping up to be one of fall 2026’s standout knit trends, according to E! News. Once tied to school uniforms and “grandpa-core” looks, the piece is being worn by stars including Olivia Rodrigo and Hailey Bieber with a more modern twist.
To explain how to style the trend, E! spoke with celebrity stylist Sammie Moussallam, who has spent 15 years dressing clients including members of the Real Housewives. He said sweater vests work well for layering because they add structure without the commitment of a full suit.
Moussallam recommended shopping for a slightly relaxed V-neck style that is not too long, since it can be worn over shirts and tees or under a jacket. He also said wool and wool blends are best for warmth, while merino offers a lighter feel. Cotton, cashmere, acrylic and synthetic blends can all work depending on budget and desired look.
The stylist also advised checking quality details such as ribbing, knit density and whether the vest holds its shape when stretched. He said a sweater vest can work for school, work or casual wear, and suggested pairing patterned base layers with solid vests, while plain shirts leave room for the vest to carry the pattern.
According to Moussallam, the trend is especially useful in fall because it adds warmth around the torso while leaving the arms free, making it a smart option for changing temperatures. He said a crisp button-down under a V-neck vest is the most reliable combination, while chunkier versions and oversized fits can create a more casual, fashion-forward look.
