Gwyneth Paltrow responds to Sam Altman dinner backlash with parody invites

Gwyneth Paltrow is responding to criticism over reports that she planned a private dinner for OpenAI founder Sam Altman. According to E! News, the backlash grew after entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni shared a photo of the alleged invitation in his Puck newsletter on Aug. 18.

The reported gathering was described as a private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at Paltrow’s home in the Hamptons on Aug. 29. Online commenters called the event tone-deaf and criticized Paltrow for spotlighting the AI leader, whose company created ChatGPT.

While Paltrow did not directly address the reports in a statement, she posted her own version of the invitation on Instagram on Aug. 20. The carousel featured fictional honorees including M3GAN, Samantha Jones, Shrek, Jessica Rabbit and comedian Courtney O’Donnell’s viral meme character Chanty Beluga.

In the post, Paltrow joked, “We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request.” E! News noted that she has previously spoken positively about AI and said in earlier interviews that she believes the technology is important, while also stressing that artists and real human creativity still matter.
